From the simple breakfasts to the extravagant feasts of the Netherfield Ball in Pride and Prejudice, mealtimes in Austen’s novels reveal much about the social status and wealth of her characters. Hazel Mills will guide us through the abundance of fresh produce, the elaborate menus, and the culinary customs of Jane Austen’s time, bringing her world vividly to life.

This year marks the 250th anniversary of Jane Austen’s birth, making this talk particularly timely. Hazel Mills, a retired science teacher and a founding member of the Cambridge Group of the UK Jane Austen Society, brings her passion for Austen to Denmark. Now living in Fynshav, Hazel Mills boasts an impressive collection of more than 200 editions of Pride and Prejudice, including
a growing number of Danish translations. She has also established a Jane Austen group in Denmark, uniting enthusiasts from South and Mid Jutland and Fyn for a variety of events.
